Preamble
My name is John Desmond Nai, though many call me by my native name ‘Nii Sowah’.
I was born and raised in Amasaman and have always had a love for this mighty Amasaman Constituency. Let’s be honest though: while Amasaman Constituency has expanded over the years, the constituency is not on a path to blossom to its fullest social and economic potential. With the majority of communities deprived of basic amenities and infrastructure, the challenges we face in the constituency are sundry. Take education, for instance: children of poor parents struggle to make the required aggregate to qualify into second cycle institutions; the few brilliant and outstanding students are always not able to continue into tertiary institutions due to lack of funding; those who manage to graduate from universities are faced with unemployment due to lack of a refined employability system or a small-scale business start-up module supported by micro credit.
As a teenager and young man from the Amasaman constituency, I was often troubled by these challenges and had the resolve to contribute to the betterment of our constituency. My resolve has been reaffirmed in several ways, including political. I write to you today as a son of Amasaman who after completing his education in Ghana (Secondary) and England (Bachelors and Masters), permanently relocating to the locality almost a decade ago and working in the investment banking sector of Ghana, is ready to fulfill this lifelong commitment by running for the esteemed position of Chairman of the Constituency.
Throughout the years, I have developed a keen interest in the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s political dispensation. The NDC’s achievements in decentralization and infrastructural policies remain unmatched, as enumerated in the 2020 manifesto. I align with the party’s political agenda and seek to make a lasting impact and difference when elected as Chairman of the Constituency.
Although I am highly spirited and fully geared up for the campaign, my mission is to do things differently from regular politicians in a typical campaign. I have desisted from taking money from lobbyists and those with selfish motives so as to avoid undeserving influence, repetition of previous administrations’ pitfalls and unfair distribution of resources.
I bring on board over two decades of management and investment banking experience from diverse business facets both locally and abroad, with expertise in International Marketing, Management and Finance.
In Ghana, I have served as a Board member for three companies, worked as an Executive Director for Everbond Financial Services and Wealth Vision Financial Services; CEO of Desville Apartments Complex (a furnished apartments for holiday makers); Coordinator with Junior Chamber International(JCL), a non-governmental organization, I lead Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) advocacy in the community; as an Administrator for L.F. Montessori School, I implemented successful strategies for a massive expansion into a high school and academic excellence; and as the first ever Resource Officer of the newly built Teachers Resource Center and Library Complex for the Amasaman District, under the auspices of the Ga District Administration; as a Polls Supervisor for the National Democratic Congress, our Parliamentary candidate won the seat; as a National Service Organizing Secretary for the National Service Scheme, the then Ga District (Ga West Municipality) won the overall best.
Given the opportunity, my immediate aims for the Constituency are to establish a sustainable educational fund and scholarship schemes for poor, but brilliant students; offer skills training for the youth; provide micro credit for small businesses; spearhead women empowerment projects; establish cooperative unions; conduct an employability survey; provide boreholes as a source of potable water and biodigesters as toilet facilities.
It is in this regard that my team and I have toured the breadth and depth of the constituency (one of the largest in the country) and interacted with many constituents. What we saw, heard and witnessed from the grassroots only sharpened my resolve. I am determined with unquenchable passion to contribute to the political and socio-economic development of the constituency through unity, grassroots development and accountability.
